Greetings! Happy October 30! Tomorrow is Halloween, the day where children march in the streets wearing costumes and bang on innocent citizens’ doors in demand of candy. And strangely, during this time of year we enjoy getting creeped out.
Today I am going to be recommending to you my favorite books that have one thing in common: they are all a bit spooky. Whether or not you celebrate Halloween, you might just find your next favorite mystery or thriller on this list.
Lockwood and Co.
When the dead come back to haunt the living, Lockwood & Co. step in . . .
For more than fifty years, the country has been affected by a horrifying epidemic of ghosts. A number of Psychic Investigations Agencies have sprung up to destroy the dangerous apparitions.
Lucy Carlyle, a talented young agent, arrives in London hoping for a notable career. Instead she finds herself joining the smallest, most ramshackle agency in the city, run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood. When one of their cases goes horribly wrong, Lockwood & Co. have one last chance of redemption. Unfortunately this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive.
Set in a city stalked by spectres, The Screaming Staircase is the first in a chilling new series full of suspense, humour and truly terrifying ghosts. Your nights will never be the same again . . .
This series is one of my all time favorites. The characters are funny, realistic, and well developed. You’ll cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh, and fear when they’re afraid. Lucy, Lockwood, George, and Skull are like a family to me. Their adventures are filled with unexpected turns, terrifying ghosts, and surprising enemies.
Serafina and the Black Cloak
“Never go into the deep parts of the forest, for there are many dangers there, and they will ensnare your soul.”
Serafina has never had a reason to disobey her pa and venture beyond the grounds of the Biltmore estate. There’s plenty to explore in her grand home, although she must take care to never be seen. None of the rich folk upstairs know that Serafina exists; she and her pa, the estate’s maintenance man, have secretly lived in the basement for as long as Serafina can remember.
But when children at the estate start disappearing, only Serafina knows who the culprit is: a terrifying man in a black cloak who stalks Biltmore’s corridors at night. Following her own harrowing escape, Serafina risks everything by joining forces with Braeden Vanderbilt, the young nephew of the Biltmore’s owners. Braeden and Serafina must uncover the Man in the Black Cloak’s true identity… before all of the children vanish one by one.
Serafina’s hunt leads her into the very forest that she has been taught to fear. There she discovers a forgotten legacy of magic, one that is bound to her own identity. In order to save the children of Biltmore, Serafina must seek the answers that will unlock the puzzle of her past.
This book was packed full of suspense, mystery, and drama. I love the relationship between Braeden and Serafina, and the plot twists and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was so sad when this trilogy ended. Definitely a series to add to your fall TBR!
City of Ghosts
Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.
When The Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.
This book was so good I read it in one night. I loooved Jacob and felt like I was holding my breath the whole time because I never knew what was going to happen next. Definitely the perfect read for anyone looking for action and ghosts!
. . .
Have you added any of these books to your TBR? I know, I know–you’re TBR stack is already overwhelming enough. But trust me. You won’t regret picking up these books.
